The great rivalry show between the social media websites to capture the highest number of users is here back again. Google on its official blog announced on 10th January the introduction of Social Search – mix of search content and personal content for various search queries. The Google post by Amit Singhal , a Google fellow (posted at 06 : 29 am !) states :
” today we’re taking another big step in this direction by introducing three new features:
- Personal Results, which enable you to find information just for you, such as Google+ photos and posts—both your own and those shared specifically with you, that only you will be able to see on your results page;
- Profiles in Search, both in autocomplete and results, which enable you to immediately find people you’re close to or might be interested in following; and,
- People and Pages, which help you find people profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic or area of interest, and enable you to follow them with just a few clicks. Because behind most every query is a community. “
“For years, people have relied on Google to deliver the most relevant results any time they wanted to find something on the internet.
“Often, they want to know more about world events and breaking news. Twitter has emerged as a vital source of this real-time information, with more than 100 million users sending 250 million tweets every day on virtually every topic. As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter; as a result, Twitter accounts and tweets are often the most relevant results.
“We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organisations and Twitter users.”
I think the behavior of the industry is just like being the girl pissed off when you danced with someone she doesnt like after turning you down. The initiative of Google seems awesome as it will help the users find content as and when required. To quote Amit Singhal “Search is pretty amazing at finding that one needle in a haystack of billions of webpages, images, videos, news and much more”. It makes it easy for me to find the right content as and when required for my various presentations. Besides through various updates I can get quick and easy access to reviews about product,place,price and person. Later I can compare these results to find out which brands are marketing aggressively by posting goofy , unverified reviews.
Besides I believe its very cool that Google has integrated the social results with the web results. When I search on Facebook , I get results from Facebook and then from Bing on the same breath when I search on Twitter, I get search topics talked about on Twitter. I feel there is no harm done by this move and these legal cat fights are part and parcel of the Silicon Valley – thank God I am not a part of it.
It has been amazing watching how Google has taken initiative in just the past few years to put their users at the forefront. No longer is it just about improving algorithms for page ranking — it is about making the web more usable for individuals.
Furthermore, with the over abundance of SEO marketing experts ( like me ), each trying to push their clients’ websites to the top of a Google search, it would be nice to see my top search results filled with results pertinent to me and my life instead of placed there by some company who has successfully trolled their way to the top.
Besides please remember that the social results can be turned off just by a click of a button. Also relax about your girl finding your photographs with that killer lady that you shared with your friends as Amit Singhal states “Personal Results, which enable you to find information just for you, such as Google+ photos and posts—both your own and those shared specifically with you, that only you will be able to see on your results page”.
I think its time the Silicon Valley grows up from fighting like a bunch of kids and innovate products ,services and application that look forward to a better tommorow.
