The New Thunderstorm In the Clouds : Google Drive

Way back in February 2007 , there was the start of new revolution with the release of Google Docs. It enabled Microsoft Office products like Word, Excel etc to be created, edited, stored and most importantly collaborate with multiple users to work on same spreadsheet or document in real time. Startups ,SMEs , students and many others  just loved this new feature , as they can now escape the high license fees of buying Microsoft Office. It shocked the software conglomerate and shook its market share.

Th revolution seems to happen again with the official launch of Google Drive. Defined by Google as – “a place where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff“. It definitely a landmark start of a new gamut of features for the professional and the dude.

Some of the features listed are as follows :

  • Collaborate Creation : Google Docs is now a part of Google Drive , hence besides the usual documents , spreadsheets and presentations, you and your friends can share, comment on any PDF, image , video/audio etc.  Selecting the best pictures from the photo shoot or sharing ideas to improve an audio/video file can now be done anytime , anywhere except the office.
  • Store and Access Everywhere : Your digital content is available anytime and anywhere. The Google Drive enables installation on a Mac or PC, Andriod phone or tablet. The official Google blogpost reports that they are still working on developing a Drive App for iOS devices.
  • Search Your Content:  Drive comes with Optical Character Recognition technology, which enables to convert all your text paper documents into content that can be recognized and searched. The paper receipts of your tablet purchase or all those medical bills  can now be searched based on the content in the documents. Google reports that it is early stages of this technology and promises to identify the images and arrange them accordingly for search.

The Google Drive is available for free storage upto 5 GB and can be later upgraded to 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or even 1TB for $49.99/month. Besides every upgrade for Google Drive , will expand Gmail account by 25 GB

The most important and exciting part is the development of third party tools providing awesome services like – sending faxes, edit videos, create website mockup and much more on your Drive. For now items on your Drive can be used for Posts on Google + and emails on Gmail.

With the presence of cloud storage heavy weights , Google Drive is worth to watch out for. The competition would shift from providing storage to providing apps that help increase productivity with minimal efforts. If Google can deliver more than the promises made, it would definitely be a “thunderstorm in the clouds” .
